Babies Trump Asparagus Pickles

May 13, 2010

Last spring, I was avidly experimenting with asparagus pickle recipes. This one here is a terrific recipe and now’s the time to pickle asparagus!

Asparagus is a Michigan crop, although I’m skeptical about how much asparagus eaten in the United States is actually grown here. Much of the asparagus you eat probably comes from Peru. A great film about the asparagus industry and trade is Asparagus: Stalking the American Life, which was made by a Calvin College alumnus Kirsten Kelly.

However, this year I’m not pickling asparagus because I have a baby (who, btw, eats the most local food humanly possible). Justin and I are proud to welcome Evelyn St. John as our first daughter. She was born this past Friday, May 7, at 6:18 PM. She was 21 1/2 inches long and weighed 8 lbs, 3.6 oz.

So…if the frequency of my posts seems even more hit-and-miss, please understand why.

Congratulations, Joy. I am so happy for you. She is just precious, and, of course, I love her name. Where did the St. John come from? I can’t wait to hear more about her 🙂
